This year the Red Bank Crop Walk is celebrating 40 years of walking and Luther Memorial has been involved in all of them but two. On October 18, because of the corona virus pandemic and the need for social distancing, we will be doing our walk virtually. What this means is that we will be asking for Luther Memorial walkers to either walk in their neighborhood or walk as a group in our own church parking lot. Each walker can also decide how far they want to walk. As for donations, they can either be given by check to the individual walker or you can also donate online by credit card or PayPal provided the walker is registered online as a Luther Memorial team walker. Checks can also be mailed to Luther Memorial Church and should be made out to “Red Bank Crop Walk”. More of this will be explained in the coming weeks.
Fifty-one years ago, through Church World Service, the very first community crop walk was organized in North Dakota and $25,000 was raised. Over the years we have seen great progress in reducing hunger through better farming methods, tools, stronger seeds, education, better sanitation, and clean drinking water. In 2019 our Red Bank Walk helped by raising $106,000 and collected 17,000 pounds of food staples for local pantries. But hunger persists - in large part due to the millions of displaced people who have fled their homes, jobs, and security in the face of great danger. Along with the pandemic with millions of people out of work, we have seen hurricanes, cyclones, floods, and droughts. Wherever and whenever, Crop walkers and through your donations, have made a difference to many around the world and in our own backyard. Twenty-five percent of the money we raise stays right in our own community helping local food pantries, day care centers, housing programs and lunch programs.
As in the past we will also be collecting peanut butter, rice, beans, and soup which will be given to Lunch Break. Because of the current situation, we will be collecting the food in the church parking lot at a later date to be decided.
With your help and enthusiasm to meet the challenges we face this year; we will keep on walking and invite others to join in with heart and ‘sole’ to help us to end hunger. For now, we need to start signing up walkers. Any age is welcome to join, and since you decide how far you want to walk this year, this should open it up to more walkers.
